Al Adelman is serving as the Chair of the American Health Lawyers Association Hospital and Health Law Institute Program Planning Committee.  The Hospital and Health Law Institute Program will be held in Las Vegas in February 2011.

Al Adelman and Tim Adelman co-authored the "The MS.01.01.01 Implementation Guidebook" which provides interpretations, analysis and practical advice needed to meet the requirements of this new Joint Commission medical staff standard, including samples of bylaw provisions.  This publication is available through the American Health Lawyers Association online store
Ron Sheff represented The Park School of Baltimore in a $14.5 million tax-exempt bond transaction to refinance the School with bank-qualified bonds.
Michele Smith obtained a favorable opinion for her client from the Court of Special Appeals which upheld the Circuit Court's grant of her motion to transfer venue of a case from Baltimore City to a suburban county.
Tom Turgeon obtained a favorable decision in the Court of Special Appeals upholding a jury verdict for the defense on the issue of whether there was sufficient evidence of plaintiff's contributory negligence at trial in a multi-vehicle highway accident case.
Tim Adelman was selected to be the Chair of the Medical Staff, Credentialing and Peer Review practice group for American Health Lawyers Association.  Tim had served as Vice-Chair for three years prior.
Lisa Thompson co-authored a chapter titled "Accreditation, Licensure, Certification and Surveying Bodies" in the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, American Hospital Association, Risk Management Handbook for Healthcare Organizations.
Tim Adelman successfully defended an appeal on behalf of a hospital in the Maryland Court of Special Appeals in a case brought by an employee alleging wrongful termination.  At issue was whether the employee was terminated for alleged poor performance and job abandonment or for whistleblowing activities.  The trial court had granted the hospital's Motion for Summary Judgment and the appellate court upheld the trial court's decision.
Ron Sheff participated in a round table, "Hospital-Orthopedist Partnerships:  Uncertain Times Call for New Career and Practice Plans," discussing challenges faced when hospitals and groups of physicians enter into business arrangements.  The round table discussion was published in Orthopedics Today.  To view, click here.
Tim Adelman presented on regulatory issues related to medical records and the implementation of electronic health records to physician practices and health systems attending a continuing education program in Baltimore.
Tim Adelman represented on the confidentiality and maintenance of medical records, addressing HITECH, The Joint Commission standards, CMS Condition of Participation, recommended policies and implementation of electronic health records, at a continuing education program in Annapolis.
Al Adelman was Chair of the Program Committee of the AHLA's Hospitals and Health Systems Law Institute in Miami in February 2010, where he presented on "Avoiding and Winning Credentialing Litigation."
Lisa Thompson published an article on "Tips for RAC Appeal Strategies" in the AHLA Regulation, Accreditation and Payment Practice Group publication, RAP Sheet in June 2010.  The article discusses strategies for providers for appealing Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC)audits.  To view the article, click here.  
Lisa Thompson presented at the HCCA Research Compliance Conference in Dallas in April 2010 on "Compliance Challenges in Establishing and Using Clinical Databases for Research."     
Cathy Martin co-authored an article entitled “Preparing for Quality-Based Payments: Trends and Legal Barriers to Successful Implementation” that was published in the Journal of Health & Life Sciences Law. The article explores legal issues associated with successful implementation of pay-for-performance and quality-focused initiatives aimed at addressing the growing cost and variability of health care quality. Lisa Thompson presented at the AHLA Hospitals and Health Systems Law Institute in Miami in Feburary 2010 on "Medicare Termination Actions:  How to Get Out of the Frying Pan and Avoid the Fire."
Tim Adelman recently represented a physician before a peer review hearing panel reviewing a medical executive committee’s recommendation to revoke the practitioner’s privileges.  After a three day hearing, the Panel members voted to reinstate the practitioner’s privileges.
Al participated in the American Health Lawyers Association Convener on Stark Law that took place in Washington, D.C.  The Convener brought together prominent Stark Law experts to discuss the efficacy of the Stark Law.  A white paper on the Stark Law summarizing the participants' views and suggestions for improving the law is available on the AHLA website by clicking here
Tim Adelman obtained a jury verdict in favor of his client in a dispute over the value of construction services and whether the parties breach the construction agreement.
In a reported Maryland Court of Special Appeals opinion, a defense verdict obtained at trial by Michael von Diezelski on behalf of his physician client was upheld.  The case, Herbert Livingstone v Greater Washington Anesthesia & Pain Consultants, P.C., helped clarify when a party during trial must object to evidence the party previously sought to exclude through a motion in limine in order to preserve the issue for appeal. 
Cathy Martin was invited to join the Clinovations Collaborative.   Clinnovations is a networking and learning collaborative - Clinovations Collaborative - founded in November 2007 in order to bring together healthcare executives for the purpose of discussing today’s most pressing healthcare issues. Members are clinical and operational executives who are solving today’s healthcare problems and providing insight with their relevant, real world experience. The primary goal of the Collaborative is to provide Clinovation members and the healthcare community, including patients and health providers, access to leading practice information.
Cathy Martin co-authored an article in the AHLA Hospitals & Health System Rx reviewing the anti-markup and physician self-referral issues contained in the 2009 Physician Fee Schedule.
Al Adelman has once again been selected to be listed in DC’s Best Lawyers for 2009, Maryland Super Lawyers for 2009, and Chambers USA-America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.
Michael von Diezelski obtained a defense verdict in a medical malpractice case involving allegations that a physician failed to timely diagnose and treat a compartment syndrome in a patient’s leg. After a two week trial, the jury found in favor of Mr. von Diezelski’s client by finding that the physician complied with the standard of care.
Cathy Martin was named to the Board of the Tyanna Barre O’Brien Breast Cancer Foundation.  The Tyanna Foundation works to increase awareness and generate money for breast cancer research, services, education, treatment and patient care.
Cathy Martin was a speaker at the National Healthcare Incentives Institute which was held in Washington, D.C.  The presentation covered the legal and operational issues surrounding gainsharing and incentive programs. 
Cathy Martin was a speaker at the Society for Research Administrators International Annual Meeting which was held in Washington, D.C.  The presentation covered the currently regulatory landscape in clinical research with a particular emphasis on the fraud and abuse laws.
Michele Smith successfully defended an emergency medicine physician before the Maryland Board Of Physicians, resulting in dismissal of charges.
Al Adelman is one of the principal authors and editors of a publication from American Health Lawyers entitled “Peer Review Hearing Guidebook.”  The Guidebook focuses on the legal issues involved in conducting peer review hearings, procedures and medical staff bylaws that should be in place to facilitate and effective and fair hearing, and practical steps tat can be taken to improve the peer review and hearing processes.  More information about the Guidebook can be found by clicking here.
Tim Adelman was a speaker at the luncheon meeting of the Medical Staff Credentialing and Peer Review Practice Group which was held at the American Health Lawyers Association’s Hospitals and Health Systems Program in Orlando, Florida.  The presentation reviewed trends in significant medical staff credentialing cases over the past four years.
